It’s a pretty standard migration route for those of us who need a seasonal reset and a serious vitamin D boost. I myself travel this route at least once per winter season. When I come back, you already know that I’ll share some awesome spots for you to check out.

2 days in Miami might not seem like a lot of time but trust me that this itinerary will give you that small Miami boost that you need. This Miami 2 day itinerary is perfect not just for cold season travels but can be referenced all year round.

If you have more time in my favorite city, you can check out my full Miami guide or even my Miami to Key West one and if you’re traveling with your girlfriends, then check out the Miami Girls Weekend guide! Both offer unique ideas for visiting Miami and I am sure you will find something that aligns best with your upcoming trip.

Day 1: Brunch + Design District + Night Activity

But first, let’s Brunch

Brunch is an absolute must to start your Miami exploring. Some ideas for a good meal:

  • Mandolin – Mediterranean food, located in Design District, cool Greek aesthetics
  • Cvi.Che 105 – Stylish Peruvian chain with a couple of locations in the city
  • Kalamata – Another Mediterranean spot with high-quality fresh dishes
  • Mila – A boujee MediterrAsian restaurant and rooftop lounge with a unique brunch
  • Orange Blossom – A typical brunch spot. Make sure to check out the back patio.

Design District

The Design District is a vibrant and dynamic neighborhood that celebrates design, fashion, art, and architecture. It’s one of the fairly newer neighborhoods in Miami and I have to say it’s pretty impressive! In my previous guides, I always mentioned that this area was on my Miami to-do list and I’m happy to say that on my last visit, I got to explore it!

As you stroll through the Design District, you’ll be amazed by the stunning architecture that surrounds you. From the restored historic buildings to the modern structures designed by the world’s top architects, every corner is a feast for the eyes.

The Design District is also a shopper’s dream. From high-end luxury fashion brands like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Prada, to independent boutiques and concept stores, you’ll at least indulge in some window shopping like myself. There are some restaurants on site too if you want to take a break from exploring!

Dinner Time

A nice dinner is a must in Miami and there is no shortage of places to have one. Here are some fresh options for you however if you’d like more, head over to the full Miami guide I mentioned earlier:

  • Gitano: Have some good Mexican among gorgeous Tulum vibes
  • Contessa: Old school Italian located in a modern Design District
  • The Bazaar: Dine in Jose Aviles’ boujee Latin restaurant

Night out in Miami

If a 24-hour club in Miami or walking down Ocean Drive along with all the other tourists is the last thing you want to do on a night out, don’t worry, I have better choices for ya. Don’t get me wrong, you certainly have to experience the Miami classics as well but at a certain point you’ll want to try something new instead. I personally don’t want to club until 4 am anymore but still want to have a great night in Miami! So I’d recommend the following alternatives:

Viernes Culturales or Cultural Fridays is an event in Little Havana that takes place every third Friday of the month starting at noon. There will be music, dancing, local artisans, good food, and awesome drinks. Go at night for a fun vibe and a very cute cultural experience. Even if you don’t happen to be in Miami on the third Friday of the month, Little Havana at night is a fun place to be!

Another unique option and totally opposite of a neighborhood party are events at Faena Hotel. If you don’t know Faena, it’s a super boujee hotel that most of us can’t afford to stay at. However, a drink or a show at night, although not cheap, are cool glimpses into Miami Luxury stays. Currently, you can see Allura Cabaret on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at the Faena Theater! In addition to the show, they have live music events along with some rotating shows. Dress to impress and enjoy a nice night out!

Day 2: Beach + Exploring + Activity

Beach time

Do not forget to schedule beach time into your 2 days in Miami! It would honestly be a sin not to take a nice stroll along the beautiful coast or to lay out and soak in the sun for a little bit. The beach hugs Miami on the east side and most of it is public. You can rent chairs at pretty much any point and a lot of hotels have some sort of beach chair arrangement.

On my most recent stay, I stayed in my new favorite Miami hotel, The Confidante, and I enjoyed the beach in that area. I also spent the morning soaking up the sun and swimming in a heated pool.

Afternoon Exploring

Before you explore, don’t forget to grab a bite. If you don’t want a formal sit down, a good place for a quick but delicious bite is the TimeOut Market. Although they’re pretty touristy, I do enjoy them because they do a good job of gathering the local specialties in a nicely situated place where you can also grab a decent afternoon cocktail!

Now back to exploring. Miami has a ton of exciting neighborhoods which I go into detail about in my full Miami guide. However, here’s a quick recap on some:

  • Wynwood – What started as a hipster neighborhood with funky murals, coffee shops, and industrial vibes turned into a highly desired living area with $20 drinks. Nonetheless, a visit is well worth it and if you don’t want to spend too much, stop at a brewery like Veza Sur or Cerveceria La Tropical.
  • Little Havana – Always a favorite of mine to grab a fresh Mojito and enjoy the Cuban vibes.
  • South Beach – The most touristy yet iconic part of Miami with Art Deco buildings, and streets like Ocean Drive, Collins Ave or Espanola Way.
  • Brickell – Financial area of Miami with high rises and drink spots on rooftops.
  • Coral Gables – A boujee neighborhood with shopping, tree-lined streets, mansions and the famous Venetian Pool.

or some cool Miami activities …

If you’ve been to Miami a couple of times already or if you’re looking for something outside out of the most touristy spots, here are some ideas for unique Miami things to do:

Miami Nature Activities

Miami has some awesome nature spots that people often forget to check out. If you’d like to check out some unique vegetation, head over to Miami Beach Botanical Garden in South Beach, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden or The Kampong both in Coral Gables.

You can also do a classic Everglades tour on an airboat! Some tours pick you up from Miami while others are located in the Everglades National Park.

Tour ideas

Another fun thing you can do is check out some of the local tours. These are pretty unique and give you a totally new perspective on the city! I always recommend a good boat day but there are many more things to do in Miami. Here is a list of cool activities I found with some top-rated reviews!

That’s a wrap on 2 days in Miami!

Miami is truly one of my favorite cities around. Even a quick 2-day getaway gets me the Miami boost I desperately need. Whether it’s your 1st or 20th time in Miami, this city’s vibe is really unmatched. And while you can totally spend the entire 2 days in Miami on a beach, or boat, or sipping drinks by the pool, if you’re an explorer like myself, I hope this guide gave you some new ideas for your upcoming trip!

Don’t forget to check out my Miami to Key West itinerary! Key West truly feels like another country and is a really iconic place to visit in your lifetime.

To-do list before the trip:

  • Decide which area you’d like to stay in – for quick getaways, South Beach is always a safe pick
  • If you’re booking an Airbnb, do as far ahead as possible, hotels should also be booked far out
  • Make reservations for brunches and dinners in the more popular places
  • Plan your outfits well, in Miami, you dress to impress!

Day 1 of the Perfect Miami Girls Weekend

Friday or Saturday Arrival

For your Miami girls weekend, aim to arrive on Friday night if possible. However, if you’re planning a quick getaway, arriving early on Saturday morning is a great option. Flights on Fridays can be pricier, and you’ll need to add an extra night to your hotel stay. Keep in mind that arriving on Saturday morning means you’ll need plenty of energy for the day ahead.

Miami International Airport is the most convenient option, but flying into Fort Lauderdale is also viable. A ride into town will cost between $40-$70, depending on surge pricing.

Once you arrive, head straight to your hotel to drop off your luggage and freshen up. Most hotels offer luggage storage before check-in and allow you to use their amenities while you wait for your room. Your accommodation choice will depend on your budget. Collins Avenue is ideal for beachfront hotels but tends to be more expensive. Smaller hotels off Collins offer beach access through other hotels but can be hit or miss.

What are the best places to stay for a girls’ weekend in Miami?

Some other places I stayed in the past and my thoughts on them:

  • Pestana – loved it, super clean and the staff was super nice, not beachfront though.
  • Generator Hostel is my absolute favorite budget pick for the area. You can easily rent a whole room to yourselves with the ladies.
  • The Confidante – loved loved this place, however they are rebranding now and updating their property!
  • The Franklin – an apartment-like property, good for a group of friends.
  • Marseilles – trendy backyard, beachfront but most people using their space aren’t staying at their hotel.
  • Redbury – didn’t love it, rooms were nice but the amenities were shit, and the SLS beach access what a total joke because they treated you horribly.

And here are more picks for the area:

Brunch Options for Your Miami Girls Weekend

Brunch is a must-do during your Miami girls weekend, and it’s essential to do it right. While brunch in Miami is a blast, reservations are almost always necessary. A little tip: pace yourself with the rosé and Aperol Spritzes—you’ll need energy for the rest of your exciting day ahead!

If you haven’t spent much time in South Beach, it’s the perfect place to soak up the vibrant atmosphere before exploring other areas. While it can get a bit lively, with the right spots, you’ll have an amazing time. Here are some fantastic brunch options, especially for those new to Miami:

  • Orange Blossom: an Aperol Spritz bottomless brunch? Yassss! This gem of a place won me over just for that. The food is great prices are good (for Miami) and the atmosphere is great. Note that they have an outdoor patio that’s super nice.
  • Nikki Beach: A Miami staple, a beach club but also a restaurant. Surprisingly for such a hyped-up place they do have great food.
  • Serena: This stunning rooftop has all you need for a Miami Girls brunch! Vibes, delicious food and booze.
  • Versace Mansion: Want to experience luxury without the insane price tag? Visit Gianni’s at lunch and for a prix-fix menu under $40, you won’t be disappointed, it’s the best hack to enjoy this stunning restaurant.
  • Sweet Liberty: Bottomless rosé, tasty brunch menu, cool atmosphere? Say no more.
  • Palace: Yes I know, touristy and ratchet, but if you enjoy a cheesy drag show then you don’t want to skip the bottomless $45 brunch here right on Ocean Drive 🙂

If you want to venture outside of South Beach try places like Brickell or Wynwood. Here are some brunch picks below:

  • Pastis: A stylish French restaurant in the middle of Wynwood.
  • R House: Another drag bar but perhaps a bit more classy than Ocean Drive. $50 will get you food, bottomless drinks, and a show.
  • Barsecco: A boozy brunch with delicious food in the heart of Brickell? Say less.
  • Tap 42: Located in Midtown and a little more laid-back, this place gets pretty lively for brunch. $25 bottomless deal is a steal too.
  • Crazy About You: Classy ladies call for a classy waterfront brunch and that’s what you’ll find at this not so hidden gem.

Beach time or pool time

After brunch, it’s time to hit the beach—an essential part of any Miami girls weekend. You have a couple of options for enjoying the beach:

  1. Hotel Beachfront Chairs: Many hotels offer beachfront chairs, often for a fee. It’s a fun addition to your vacation, especially with drink service.
  2. DIY Beach Setup: Alternatively, grab a blanket and set up your spot on the sand. While many people drink on the beach, be aware it’s not officially allowed.

Collins Avenue hotels also offer fantastic backyard pools, lounge chairs, and beachfront amenities like day clubs. Spend some time soaking up the sun and the vibrant South Beach atmosphere. For added fun, join a hotel’s day party. Pro tip: Reach out to a promoter for a free cabana.

A quick reminder: Don’t underestimate the Miami sun. Even with 50 SPF sunscreen, make sure to reapply frequently, especially if you have fair skin like m

Dinner time in Miami

Ya might need a nap before dinner time after a boozy brunch and a day in the sun. Hopefully, you didn’t die during the day and were able to keep up. Trust me, I know as I made the rookie Miami mistake of pushing day drinking a little far. Remember, this is a marathon, not a sprint 🙂

Dinner options in Miami are truly endless. If it’s your first time in Miami I recommend booking something on Espanola Way. Yes, it is super touristy but it will allow you to truly feel the Miami vibe. Ocean Drive is the furthest thing away from classy so aside from grabbing a drink there, I don’t think I’d have a meal on that street. Brickell and Design District are a little more classy. If you’re looking for a gentrified hipster vibe, do not miss Wynwood. Here are my favorite picks for your girl’s weekend in Miami:

  • Pane e Vino: There is no better place in Miami and I mean it. It’s tiny so you will need reservations way in advance. The pasta is unbelievable and so is this place.
  • Wanna be boujee for the night at some top Miami picks? Try Sugar, La Mar or Mila.
  • Mandolin: Greece or Miami? Honestly, what a vibe. This is a perfect spot among the chaos of this city.
  • Carbone: Miami glamour meets NYC mob money vibes? I haven’t seen anything like this yet and I’m all for it.
  • Havana 1957 Espanola Way: If you want the touristy vibes of Espanola Way but don’t want to sacrifice quality, this is the place to be. It’s cute, lively and the food is good.

Night out in Miami

What is a visit to Miami without a night out? Is there even a point? 🙂 The good news is that if this is a true Miami girl’s weekend, your night out will probably not cost you a dime. Promoters pray on good-looking groups of girls and provide free entry, bottle service, and attention for the whole night. Unfortunately, even one guy in your group will prevent you from this happening. Miami has its big clubs and then smaller joints. In my experience, I always liked smaller places but it’s worth hitting one of the famous clubs at least once in your life.

How to find a promoter you ask? Go to Instagram and search #miamipromoter and you shall find a ton of them. Make sure you meet them in a public place, preferably inside the club, do not pay them anything, and don’t be weirded out if they ask you to send Instagram pictures to them prior to the club… Check if they have some real pictures aside from posters too. I get a lot of messages asking for one but it’s been a couple of years since I used one so I’m sure there are a ton more that popped up since!

Day 2 of the Miami Girls Weekend

Breakfast

If you went out, there is a chance you were out all night. I get it, breakfast might not be for you at the moment. An early brunch is a must though because you have another day of rallying ahead. Here are some breakfast choices before your busy day ahead:

  • Necessary Purveyor: A 5-star breakfast place? I didn’t know that was possible but apparently, it is. Don’t let the central Lincoln Road Mall location deceive the quality of this place!
  • Rosetta Bakery: If your sweet tooth is as strong in the morning as fine, check out this bakery for a nice chocolate croissant. If the line is too long, pop into the bakery two doors down. Just as good if not better!
  • Pura Vida: Healthy, aesthetically pleasing, and super tasty. Owned by a super cute family too.
  • The Egg Spot: Located downtown, this is an adorable place with some tasty food.
  • Enriqueta’s Sandwich Shop: A hole-in-the-wall with bomb Cubanos and other great filling selections located closer to Wynwood. You won’t find aesthetic views here but there isn’t a hangover that this food can’t cure.

Boat time

What is a Miami Girls Weekend without a time on the boat? Miami is the boating capital of the boating capitals, especially for activities involving alcohol. I did this activity twice, once for a bachelorette party and another for a Miami Girls Weekend getaway, and both times I had a blast. Despite what you might think, this is not a very expensive activity. Although I have one person that I book with (happy to recommend, shoot me a message), go on BoatSetter and you’ll see that it’s totally affordable.

A popular way of doing this is boating around in the bay and then docking at the sandbar. The Haulover sandbar is located near northern Miami and you will be surrounded by a ton of other like-minded people. There are many boats with people playing music, drinking, and just having a good time. The water is shallow and you can easily swim, walk around and socialize with more party people.

Afternoon in Miami

I have faith that you ended up balancing out your day and you still have time to enjoy some outdoor activities. If you have not had the chance to visit Ocean Drive, maybe you should. The awesome art deco buildings, party atmosphere, and simply just a touristy vibe should be experienced at least once in your life. Grab a drink and enjoy soaking it all in.

Right after a stroll on Ocean Drive, catch the most amazing colorful sunset in the neighborhood. Miami just feels different during golden hour and one of the nicest things you can do is experience how nicely the sun sets in this city. After you explored a little of Ocean Drive, make your way near South Pointe Park and walk down to the marina there. The sunset is incredible and the quiet vibe along the beautiful boats is amazing. I recommend renting a Citibike here because it will be a long walk otherwise.

Dinner

If you followed my previous plan, a good idea is to have dinner at the known sunset spot in town Monty’s. Some additional places to consider are Sugarcane, a hip Latin-Asian fusion spot, Yardbird, a nice twist on a Southern menu, or perhaps the boujee Quinto La Huella, an upscale Uruguayan spot for a perfect Miami girl’s weekend ending.

Day 3 – Bonus

Chances are your Miami Girls weekend may be ending but if your flight isn’t leaving for a couple more hours, here are some quick ideas for some last-minute fun!

  • Bayside Marketplace: Located only 15 minutes from Miami airport, this cute shopping place is the perfect last-minute spot. Located on the water, you can shop, eat and get some to-go drinks. They recently opened a huge Ferris wheel too 🙂
  • Wynwood: It’s a whole neighborhood so I don’t think it should be rushed, but if you want to get a preview of the famous murals, this area is also located close to the airport.
  • Little Havana: Last but not least, this Cuban neighborhood is under 10 minutes from Miami Airport. You can walk Calle Ocho and enjoy a fresh mojito before returning to reality.

If you’re staying a little longer, I highly recommend checking out my full Miami guide for a much more detailed explanation of each neighborhood. I go into more detail about the city, list multiple things to do, and give you a ton of recommendations. Additionally, if you’d like to download some ready-to-print itineraries for your stay, you can do so here too.

I’d love to hear about your thoughts on Miami and what your favorite thing to do in this epic city is! Comment below!

Perfect Weekend in Key West: Your New Favorite Getaway https://www.perfectdaysomewhere.com/key-west/ https://www.perfectdaysomewhere.com/key-west/#respond Tue, 29 Dec 2020 23:40:27 +0000 https://perfectdaysomewhere.com/?page_id=2592 I always imagined Key West as a destination for older couples who have seen a lot in their lives and now just spend their winters in this “wild-dad” destination. Naturally, I had to go and check out what the hype is all about. I rented a convertible BMW with my best friend and we drove down to Key West from Miami to check out this little paradise.

Was Key West all that I imagined it would be? Yes. There were many older couples having the time of their lives there. However, there was also everyone else having an amazing time too. I honestly cannot wait to go back and spend more time in Key West. It feels like a tropical destination without leaving the country.

In this itinerary, you will find some travel logistics, and cool things to see, and be able to download a weekend in Key West itinerary for your travels. If you’re going to South Florida, don’t forget to check out my Miami Guide and a Miami Girls Weekend getaway!

Logistics of Visiting Key West

Where and how long to stay in Key West

Key West can be expensive for accommodation, so it may be more cost-effective to stay in a location closer to the action on Duval Street. If you are traveling with a group, you could consider renting an Airbnb or VRBO, but these options may not offer significant cost savings. There is a hostel in Key West, but at $90 per bed in a dorm room, it may be more economical to stay in a hotel.

I personally stayed at the Douglas House, an awesome pick in town. There was parking onsite, the staff was super helpful and friendly giving us recommendations outside of the typical tourist trail and the rooms were huge! A cute little pool along with a stunning garden were also great additions to the property.

As far as length, you can see everything in a day or two but chances are you’re not going to Key West looking for cultural adventures. It’s a place to relax, have a drink, and lay on the beach. So spend a weekend there and you should be ok, especially with the high prices in town. Although pricey, it’s not ideal to see Key West in one day.

How to get to Key West

Key West is the Southernmost point of the US which makes it a unique destination. Its tropical vibes will make you feel like you’ve traveled further than you actually have. You can either fly to the small airport located right in town but these can get crazy expensive. Another option is to drive from Miami which will take you about 3.5-4 hours without any stops. However, I will go into which Keys are worth stopping at as this is one of those bucket list drives that people romanticize.

There are buses that have daily departures for a simple Key West day trip from Miami which are an awesome option if you just want to get there without driving or stopping. For as low as a $50 roundtrip on a Greyhound, you can snooze until the very last Key. Lastly, if you’re taking a cruise in the future, a lot of ships stop there too.

When you get to town, don’t use a car unless you’re venturing to a beach a little further away. Most of Key West is walkable but you can also utilize the free shuttle that takes you around town. Another awesome option is renting a bike in town which not only allows you to get some exercise but also covers more ground in a shorter amount of time.

  • Siesta Key to Key West: 370 miles
  • West Palm Beach to Key West: 230 miles
  • Miami to Key West: 160 miles
  • Key Largo to Key West: 97 miles
  • Marathon Key to Key West: 50 miles

People & Safety in Key West

I met a couple of locals working in restaurants and bars. People living in tourist destinations are usually friendly and that’s exactly what I experienced there. All others are tourists so prepare to come across a lot of characters.

Key West is super safe. It can get rowdy at night with all the drunks on Duval Street. When you’re in crowded places like where you watch the sunset, for example, use common sense not to get pickpocketed.

Food in Key West

There is a lot of good food stops in the area but Key West is pricey so plan well. Since the island is little, you will often find the same recommendations on a lot of websites. My favorite picks for the area are Grand Vin, a wine bar serving delicious cheese plates, Santiago’s Bodega, an amazing tapas place, or my absolute favorite Key West Cuban Coffee, the best spot for food and some strong coffee!

Perfect Things To Do On Your Weekend in Key West

Drive through the Keys

When I was planning my trip, I insisted on driving to Key West from Miami while stopping at some landmarks along the way. It was one of those romanticized ideas in my head that I always wanted to do. A convertible car, palm trees, and crossing long bridges all the way down. Well … it was that but wasn’t actually as cool as I imagined.

When I was doing my research on multiple travel blogs, many “Ultimate Lists” for the Key West drive from Miami make it seem like there is an overabundance of jaw-dropping activities on the way there. There are a couple of spots that you can enjoy for a little and unless you have a lot of time and can break up the drive into two days just pick a couple not to waste time. Here are the most popular highlights for your drive:

  • Key Largo: A little over an hour from Miami, you’ll find John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. If you like snorkeling, glass-bottom boat tours or just walking around in a nice park make a stop here. There are two cool restaurants in the area, Sundowners known for its sunset views and Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen, a cool bar covered with license plates.
  • Tavernier: The next stop is just 20 minutes away. It’s a famous Key Lime shop called Blond Giraffe. Key lime pie comes from the Florida Keys so it’s a cute and cheesy thing to try in this lime green store.
  • Islamorada: Another popular spot is Rain Barrel Village, which is a little collection of art stores and shops. It’s a small stop for trinket shopping. There are giant sculptures outside of it too. For your half-way point treat make sure to stop for a brew at Florida Keys Brewing Co which has a super groovy beer garden. The one thing I loved in this area was Morada Bay Cafe, a beach restaurant with delicious food a unique dining atmosphere. I actually stopped here on the drive back from Key West for dinner, right before the sunset and I highly highly recommend doing it that way. Oh and the last thing people go nuts for here is feeding some fat tarpon fish at Robbie’s. I liked the bar area better than the creepy fish and I enjoyed some birds at the little port instead.
  • Marathon Key: People recommend staying in if you want to break up the drive and you can find the Turtle Hospital that rescues the hurt little buddies.
  • Then you will cross the Seven Mile Bridge.
  • Bahia Key: Right before reaching Key West, stop at Calusa Beach which is a stunning spot of light blues and turquoise waters with some vibrant green palm trees.
  • Bonus: There is a cool little bar a little off your path called No Name Pub.

So with all that said, do I recommend driving to Key West from Miami or skipping this part and just heading to there by plane or by bus? It’s a tricky call. If you have the time and reading about the stops above made you smile, then take this US bucket-list drive there. The views along the way are really really nice so just that aspect of it is worth it. However, if know that super touristy restaurants and feeding fish isn’t your thing, spend some extra time in Key West instead.

Southernmost Point of the US

I’m not listing this as the first activity in Key West because it’s the most exciting one but just to get it out of the way. It’s a bouy at the end of some residential street and there is a line of 40+ people waiting to take a picture with it. It’s 93 miles away from Cuba which makes people go wild for some reason. Aside from being a picture spot, there isn’t much to it.

IMG 3679 Florida
Notice how I took this photo. You won’t see the line of 40 people next to this thing.

Watching the Sunset

There really is something extremely magical about sunsets in Key West so you should make it a priority to see one. The most known spot for it is the Mallory Square area which floods with people every night for the sunset. They have a little celebration and people gather to admire the amazing colors in the sky. It’s beautiful but crowded.

Another popular option is taking a Sunset Sail with multiple companies offering an open bar and a music option with it. Then there is Sunset Pier at Ocean Key Resort. People also like Truman Waterfront where you can enjoy a sunset without the crowds, sometimes you can find a local market there too. Other good places include the super long White Street Pier or Historic Seaport with boats as your backdrop!

Duval Street

This is a famous party street in town with all the bars and restaurants. During the day it’s fairly “quiet” but still keeps the atmosphere for a party town. It does have some cute shops and pretty buildings on it so you should experience this rather popular side of town.

At night it gets rowdy with all the music in the bars and balcony drinkers. The more known stops here are Sloppy Joe’s, The Rum Bar, The Smallest Bar, and Green Parrott. If you’re up for an adventure stop at Garden of Eden which is a clothing-optional bar.

I don’t think it’s technically legal to drink in the street but a lot of people do out of plastic cups. If you get too annoying or drunk you will get a ticket though so don’t be that guy.

Hemingway Home

Do you love cats and old mansions? I love them both and I can’t think of a better combo. When I heard that Hemingway had a mansion in Key West and that there are like 50 cats that all have 6 toes, I was like “Sign me up.” I bought my ticket and explored the beautiful grounds. It was worth it but I’d also recommend getting a guide there to actually learn something.

Fort Zachary Taylor State Park Beach

I love this spot. It’s a nice beach in a park-like setting which makes it a very unique spot for this area. You can get some food and drinks from a little shop and take great pictures with those travel signs. There is more than just the beach there, you can also bike, fish or paddle. Smather’s Beach

Located in a much more quiet area of town, I enjoyed this beach for its tranquility. There aren’t that many people around so it’s a perfect spot to take a stroll and relax for a little. Note, it’s close to the airport. If you’re an enthusiast of watching planes land and take off like I am, this is a great spot for that.

Historic Port Area

The whole port area of Key West is just amazing. There is something special about ports in any part of the world so whenever I find one, I make sure to spend some time exploring it.

Simply walk around along the water and find some good bars, cute shops, and just soak in the atmosphere of Key West.

Dry Tortugas

Technically this is not in Key West but the boat will take you to this rather unique destination. It’s a state park with a fort but also some secluded beaches, tons of snorkeling options, and of course turtles. I did not get to go on my trip but one day I shall return.

Here is a map for you too.

FREE downloadable guides for Weekend in Key West

Key West is a great relaxing destination. There isn’t a ton of things to do in town but you’ll be going there to enjoy the “island” lifestyle. You will eat some good food, probably drink a lot and enjoy the beach. There is the possibility that you can only spend one day in Key West but that will only occur if you’re on a cruise ship. If that’s the case, just check out my top things to do there and pick the ones that suit your timeframe.

Whether your weekend in Key West is a two or three-day stay, I prepared a detailed itinerary for both!

Perfect Two Days in Key West

As mentioned, in my opinion, a simple day trip to Key West from Miami is not enough. Two days is a great option for the place although you can easily relax for a week there. However, most of the highlights can be seen in two days.

Perfect Three Days in Key West

If you’re staying for three days, your first two days will look like the two-day itinerary. On day three, you will have some options for a unique experience in this beautiful town.

Miami Itinerary! A Comprehensive Guide For This Amazing City https://www.perfectdaysomewhere.com/miami/ https://www.perfectdaysomewhere.com/miami/#comments Sun, 27 Dec 2020 18:27:28 +0000 https://perfectdaysomewhere.com/?page_id=2221 Miami is such a gem of a destination, with the art deco style, tons of beautiful people, lively Latin vibe, and stunning white-sand beaches, this is one of the must-visits of this country. Yes, it’s possible to just party your nights away here and sleep during the day in extremely overpriced hotels but I promise you that there is a ton of other things you can do there instead. Having visited this place for multiple weekend getaways, bachelorette parties, and my birthday, I bring you the best Miami itinerary options for this amazing destination!

The guide works like this, first, you’ll get all the logistics for your travels, then a description of things to do, and finally some awesome downloadable Miami itineraries at the bottom of the page. Whether you have 1 day in Miami or a week, this Miami travel guide brings you all you need to know. This is a comprehensive full guide on things to do in Miami, however, if you’re planning a specific Miami girl’s weekend, I recommend checking out that post instead!

Note that you may encounter some affiliate links in this post. They will not make anything more expensive for you but rather provide a small commission for me should you choose to book it via the link I provide. 🙂

Let’s get to the logistics of traveling to Miami

Where and how long to stay

There are a lot of different interesting Miami neighborhoods but if you’re planning to stay at the beach, drink, and soak in Miami you should stay in South or even Mid-Beach. South Beach is a little more lively and upbeat but Mid-Beach has a lot of nice beachfront hotels. I would choose to stay in those two areas as they’re the closest to all the major things. Don’t forget that Miami has some of the poorest areas in the States, something very easily omitted when you’re just staying in the glamorous parts.

In terms of your length of stay, a weekend in Miami can get pretty pricey especially when you want to eat at the best spots and have the best time. Know that $15 cocktails are the norm, hotels are super expensive, and eating out adds up faster than you think. However, planning correctly, saving where necessary, and not choosing the biggest traps will allow you to have a good time there. I recommend doing anywhere from 3 to 5 days for a sweet spot of relaxing but also exploring the area.

How to navigate Miami

IMG 0384 Florida

Flights to South Florida are super convenient with Miami Airport being a short 20-minute drive away. Another option, that offers more flight times for some people, especially those living in New Jersey, is taking a flight to Fort Lauderdale instead. It’s a 40-minute drive without traffic and will cost you a $40 one-way Uber ride. It’s a good option but with frequent traffic jams, plan ahead for getting to. If you have or are renting a car, an even better option is landing in West Palm beach. Although it’s the furthest away, I noticed that flight prices can be a third of what you’ll pay flying directly into Miami.

A lot of South Beach is walkable but it can get pretty tiring trying to cover all the ground on foot in the extreme heat. During my last visit, I did the newer Miami Citi Bike option and it was the best thing to happen to the city. I was able to get from point A to point B within a short amount of time while at the same time, loving my bike ride. There were so many parking stations that made that option a more convenient way of getting around. Ubers and Lyfts are also available for longer distances but that quickly adds up. Lastly, I have never used the bus system there but there are a public MetroBus and a free trolley.

Remember, Miami isn’t just South Beach and you’ll want to venture out to other neighborhoods so you will most likely get stuck with a ride-share for getting there. My favorite thing about the shared ride services there is how many awesome drivers are. I’ve learned so much about the area just from talking to them. Renting a car is possible but parking can be crazy expensive, especially with most hotels charging $40 a night to use their lots.

People

Let’s just say that knowing Spanish will come in handy while in Miami. For someone like myself who loves to practice it, sometimes it doesn’t feel like you’re in the states when you’re walking around. People are friendly and the majority of the locals you encounter will work in the hospitality industry so it’s always nice to spark a good convo. There are a lot of foreigners and tourists all over the place too.

Safety in Miami

Is Miami Safe? Just like any major city, Miami has its drug, homelessness, and crime problems. But as a tourist staying in a South Beach area, you’re just as likely to experience crime as you are in a comparable city. Walking around a night you’ll just be surrounded by late-night drunks. Keep your head up for petty crime but don’t feel alarmed all the time either.

Food

There are SO many food options in this town that if you end up having a bad meal, that’s your own fault. Your Miami itinerary needs to consist of good meals! From small hole-in-the-wall establishments to high-end dining, you are bound to find something you like. From trying numerous dining options in the city, my absolute favorite is Pane Vino near Española Way. It’s a small Italian restaurant with the best food in the entire town. They make their own pasta on the spot, the staff is mostly from Italy and they have a nice selection of wine and beers too. It truly makes you feel like you’re really in Italy. It’s certainly one of my top things to do in Miami.

Hotels/Hostels

If it didn’t hit you how expensive Miami is, it will when you’re booking a hotel. The per-night rates at the hotels you want to stay at are simply ridiculous and don’t be surprised when you get hit with a $40 resort fee per night too. Are the hotels nice? Yes but sometimes you wonder if it’s all worth it. Airbnbs can be good options but you won’t get the same amenities. To mention a couple of the ones I personally stayed at:

  • Redbury – didn’t love it, rooms were nice but the amenities were shit, and the SLS beach access what a total joke because they treated you horribly.
  • Pestana – loved it, super clean and the staff was super nice, not beachfront though.
  • The Franklin – an apartment-like property, good for a group of friends.
  • Generator Hostel is my absolute favorite budget pick for the area. You can easily rent a whole room to yourselves with the ladies.
  • Marseilles – trendy backyard, beachfront but most people using their space aren’t staying at their hotel.

There are also hostels in South Beach with reviews ranging from horrible to awesome. I never stayed at the crazy party ones and with the reputations that they have, I only recommend them if you’re looking for a weekend of complete debauchery. As I mentioned above, an amazing pick in the city is the new Generator Hostel which is a European chain that I also stayed at in Paris and Stockholm. Although located a little further uptown, I loved the traditional hostel feel, outdoor lounge space, and pool. The staff was super friendly and there was a nice hostel vibe going on too. There are private rooms on the property too if you’re not into sharing a room anymore. Weekday rooms start at a little over $20 a bed which for those amenities is incredible in Miami.

Perfect Things To Do in Miami

If you’ve never been to Miami, I recommend starting with the top items on my list and working your way down. While I wouldn’t keep on returning to a lot of these top places, I think you should experience them at least once in your life.

South Beach – Ocean Drive

At some point in your life, you probably came across images of “narcos-style” Miami with art-deco buildings, neon lights, palm trees, and exotic cars. Well, that was most likely a part of Ocean Drive. If I could travel back in time, this is the area I would visit.

As the name suggests, it’s a road located next to the ocean with a stretch of colorful pastel buildings. There are a couple of historical landmarks on it including the most known one, the Versace Mansion, now a restaurant and a hotel. Other buildings known for their design include Colony Hotel, Park Central Hotel, the famous Breakwater, The Carlyle, Cardozo, or The Tides.

However, unless you’re an enthusiast of architecture, chances are you’ll just pass right them and head to the more obnoxious part of Ocean Drive which includes day-party bars, drag shows, huge overpriced drinks, and an overall obnoxious party scene.

Ocean Drive can be a mess, especially at night, but it’s certainly worth taking a stroll during the day and then once more during the night. My personal favorite evening activity throughout the years remains Mango’s, a dinner show spot that turns into a dancing atmosphere at night. Another spot I like for drinks on that road is Havana 1957, my favorite spot to sit and people-watch. A nice pause for your day in Miami exploring.

Lummus Park Beach

This should technically be a subsection of Ocean Drive as these two are super closer neighbors. It’s also the home of Calisthenic Park which is a free outdoor gym full of super-fit humans working out. After you’re done admiring the beautiful people, put on your swimsuit and head over to the public beach. During the summer the water is amazing and there is nothing better than spending a day on the beach in Miami. Although you’re not allowed to legally drink on the beach, this rule doesn’t seem strictly enforced so don’t forget to back a cold 6 pack.

Beach Boardwalk, Towers and South Pointe Park

In addition to the beach I mentioned above, all of South Beach borders a beach 🙂 There is a relaxing boardwalk stretching along with it. It’s not a boardwalk that you’ll find in Jersey though, it’s designed for strolling or bike riding which I HIGHLY recommend there.

In addition to beautiful beaches, note the Miami lifeguard towers. Most of them have vibrant colors and cool designs so a fun thing to do is to walk along the beach and take cool pictures with them.

If you take the boardwalk all the way down, you will reach South Point Park. Again, I really recommend biking this entire thing to see the most. This park has a long pier going out in the water from which you can admire some beautiful South Beach views as well as occasional ships passing by. If you end up getting on that bike as I keep on insisting, when you’re done with the pier, keep on biking down on the south side until you reach the Marina. Compared to the crowded main area, you won’t find many tourists strolling around there so you’ll get to admire the beautiful, multi-million dollar boats casually parked there.

A couple of known restaurants in that area are Smith and Wolensky Steakhouse, Monty’s Sunset, and Joe’s Stone Crab.

Collins Ave, Lincoln Road and Española Way

Let me just put the three cousins here and give you the gist of what each is. You should take a stroll on each of these on your Miami itinerary:

  • Collins Ave: Runs parallel to Ocean Drive. It has a bunch of hotels and shops but it’s not necessarily the most appealing to me. Some stretches of it have hotel bars so it’s nice to enjoy a cocktail inside them. Some big hotels like Fountainbleu, Confidant, 1 South Beach, SLS, Lowes and Dream are located on it. The insta-famous spot at Faena Hotel is also on this road.
  • Lincoln Road Mall: It’s a shopping pedestrian street. It has some overpriced restaurants on it too and street performers at night. It’s a good street to shop on. I also like their Christmas decorations in the winter.
  • Española Way: Located about 2 blocks down and running parallel to Lincoln Road, it’s a much smaller spot but probably the most charming of them. It’s full of restaurants and good bars. I would suggest eating here just to get the cute European vibe it gives.

Wynwood

Wynwood is a little bit out of the way from South Beach but it’s one of those gentrified neighborhoods you love to hate and can’t miss on your Miami itinerary. Don’t get me wrong, the graffiti is awesome but each year that I visit, more and more $20 cocktail places appear. Maybe I can’t appreciate the cultural level of some of the galleries there but come on, some of it has to be a joke right?

Anyway, get a burger at Kush, a taco at The Taco Stand, a brew at Wynwood Brewing Company, a mojito at Mojito Company, a spritz at Astra Rooftop, a sugary slice of cake at Fireman Derek’s, and of course, do not forget to check out the Wynwood Walls.

Oh and to party, check out El Patio, Dirty Rabbit, Wynwood Factory, Vandalo, Shots, and sometimes Wynwood Marketplace.

Little Havana

This is probably one of my favorite areas of Miami and should certainly make it to your Miami itinerary! Little Havana is located about 15 minutes south of Wynwood and it’s a Cuban gem. The main part you’ll explore is Calle Ocho. Yes, the Mr. World Worldwide Calle Ocho. The little stretch has all things Cuban: restaurants, cigar shops, little trinket shops, and of course Cuban people.

You can’t miss Domino Park, where cute older gentlemen play dominoes, Azucar for the famous guava ice cream, Versailles for famous Cuban diner dishes, Ball and Chain for mojitos and salsa, Cubaocho Museum for performances and amazing drinks, Little Havana Cigar Factory for purchasing some amazing local cigars, Guantanamera Cafe and Lounge for enjoying one in the true atmosphere of Calle Ocho.

For some activities you can do one of the following:

  • Visit on the first Friday of the month for Viernes Cultures for an outdoor celebration of the area.
  • A great company that gives awesome culinary tours is Miami Culinary Tours. I did a tour with them a couple of years back and in addition to tasting all the best places, I got to learn some cool local history. Although a bit pricey, I highly recommend them.
  • It’s generally hard to find a free walking tour in Miami, something I always recommend if you read my other guides, and I haven’t found one for this area yet either. Viator has a bunch of paid options so if that’s something that interests you, check out what they offer.
  • Every March there is also a huge Carnaval celebration.

Don’t forget to try croquetas, Cuban sandwiches, Ropa Vieja, Sweet Plantains, and of course, my beloved cafecito.

Bayside Marketplace

This is a pretty touristy place but I personally really enjoy its atmosphere. As the name suggests, it’s mostly occupied by shops but there are also many restaurants there that sell to-go drinks. My selling point of the place is that it’s on the water and that you can catch some locals dancing some mid-day salsa there. Another new addition to this place is the giant Ferris wheel that offers some awesome views of the area.

Brickell/Downtown

Brickell and Downtown are very different areas of Miami as they are the financial/business parts of town. It definitely has a more upscale vibe compared to the craziness of South Beach. They’re home to a lot of good restaurants like La Mar, which I personally really like, or other popular spots like salt bae’s Nusr-et Steakhouse, a spot known for its stunning sunset views called Crazy About You, a laid back drinks spot Dolores but You Can Call Me Lolita, a known rooftop bar Sugar, or its only nightclub, El Tucan.

You can also find The Wharf, an outdoor drinking garden/dancing spot which is a super awesome bar in that area. One of my top picks.

There are many dinner options there, a lot of them being crazy expensive. My pick for that area is Casablanca Seafood Bar & Grill. It’s located on the river a little bit further out of the main zone. When you come at night and sit outside, you’ll catch those crazy party yachts parked right out. It might not be the fanciest spot in that area but the food is delicious, the views are unique and it doesn’t necessarily break the bank.

In terms of things to do in Brickell, you’re going there for the restaurant/night vibe. It’s not necessarily an area of heavy attraction options.

Vizcaya Museum & Garden

Right around the corner from Brickell, you can find the Vizcaya Mansion. It’s a stunning Renaissance Villa and gardens, formerly owned by a rich guy named James Deering. I’d personally visit that place again and again. Everything in that mansion screams old-school money. It’s a shame that you can’t bring a picnic basket there because it’d be the PERFECT place for one. However, they do host a bunch of little events throughout the year so check out what is coming up. Prepare to pay a $22 entrance fee too.

Miami Design District

To be honest with you, I have not visited this area yet despite being in Miami about a dozen times. I always put it off till my last day and then I end up drinking a cocktail on the beach instead. So, please check it out and let me know if it’s worth the hype 🙂

So this fairly new area is a spot for luxury shopping but more importantly some cool outdoor art. Its innovative and unique pieces stand out from the traditional art-deco vibe you’ll find in South Beach. Check out their page for the latest installations.

Perez Art Museum

Ok I am only listing it here for the outdoor space and sculpture garden and I only recommend visiting it if 1) you’re interested in the current exhibition or 2) you’re in the downtown area and you saw everything else. Maybe I’m an uncultured swine or got spoiled by my New York museums like MET or MOMA but for a $16 entrance, there was nothing I particularly enjoyed there. What I did love, however, is their outdoor space and views of the port. I walked around the actually not-awful gift shop, bought a nice cup of coffee, and spent some time on the cool swings outside.

Speaking of the outdoors, if you end up visiting (or skipping) the museum, take a stroll in the park next door called Maurice A. Ferré Park, where you can catch the giant cruise ships making u-turns in the port.

Day Party

It’s Miami. Chances are you didn’t come here just to lay on the beach. You probably came here to party too. If you’re staying at a beachfront hotel, follow the music. If you’d like to brunch on a beach, check out Nikki Beach restaurant. On the weekends, just walk down on Ocean and you will find a bunch of party options. Hotel day parties are popular too but they can get pricey if you have guys in your group. Fun fact, if you’re a girl you can pretty much party for free in Miami.

On Sundays stop at Broken Shaker for some good cocktails, The Palace for a drag brunch, salsa at Ball and Chain, or a drunk brunch at El Patio.

Boat Parties: Another must-do, if you’re partying in Miami, is a boat party. If you have a large group of people, rent one easily on this website which is what I did. If you’re in a smaller group then just find one on the major event websites for a fair fee. There is nothing better than Miami buildings as your backdrop while sipping a cold cocktail on a boat.

Night Party

Miami is known for its nightlife. You can go bar hopping but prepare to drop at least $15 a drink. A cool place is Bodega, a hidden club in the bathroom. Although this place used to be my go-to for taco and dancing, it’s becoming a little too hyped up but it’s still worth visiting at least once.

Clubs are abundant throughout the city and parties start after midnight. If you have a group of girls, search insta for #miamipromoter and get free bottle service for the whole night at a selected club. Don’t be offended if the promoter asks you for pictures of your group. It’s a shallow technique used to fill up clubs with good-looking girls. As long as you’re put together and dressed to impress you should be fine.

The biggest clubs include Story, Liv, or Space at which you can find a DJ lineup almost every weekend. There is a ton of little ones too where promoters will take you to and in my experience, those end up being even more fun due to a smaller crowd. Guys, you will need to pay a good chunk to have a good night 🙂 A fun place to check out is E11even, it’s truly life-changing 😉

Couple of other recommendations for your Miami itinerary:

Note some other interesting things in Miami if you’ve explored everything else above.

  • Key Biscayne: The next key after the Virginia key, if you can’t make the full Key West drive, check this area out for Crandon Park and Cape Florida Lighthouse. This is also where you will find the beautiful sunset restaurant, Rusty Pelican.
  • Everglades Tour: If you want an airboat ride in the middle of the swamp with some big crocodiles, there is a ton of tours offered with many including transport from your hotel.
  • Celebrity Home Cruise: If you care about things like looking a the homes of the rich and famous, there is a bunch of tours running from Bayside Marketplace that can take you on this cruise of invasion of privacy. A simple google search will return at least a dozen companies doing this tour.
  • Unique experiences: I like to see cities through activities like Food Tours, Walking Tours, or even kayaking tours. To find cool things to do in a city, always check out Airbnb experiences in which locals post cool things you can do in the area.

Perfect Miami Itinerary: FREE Downloadable Guides for your trip

You can easily spend at least a week in Miami but unless you have a large budget, plan for a more realistic three-day trip. If you’re also planning to take a trip to the keys, make sure to check out my Key West guide.

Perfect 1 Day in Miami

Seeing the highlights of Miami is doable in one day but it’s certainly not enough to relax and fully enjoy it. However, if that’s all that you got, download the Miami 1-day itinerary below. You will start exploring Ocean Drive and then head to an option of two different areas of town. For dinner, you will return to South Beach and have dinner in a lively atmosphere.

Perfect Two Days in Miami

My Miami 2-day itinerary option is a little more doable. On your first day, you will explore the popular Ocean Drive and then head to Wynwood. You will be ending your night back in the world-famous Miami Beach. For your second day, you will enjoy a nice breakfast, followed by a cultural experience and live music in Little Havana, and ending your day in the Brickell area.

Perfect Three Days in Miami

My favorite is the Miami 3-day itinerary option for this city. You get to soak in the atmosphere, see the main highlights and have some time to party. Your first two days will be very similar to the two-day itinerary above. On your third day, you will first enjoy a nice Miami brunch. Then you’ll head to an activity based on your preferences. You will end your end at a dinner with a sunset view of Miami.

¡Viajar a Miami!
